About the coffee
The Laurina Variety is extremely rare and difficult to plant, as it contains naturally very low caffeine. This Laurina Coffee comes from Finca La Escondida, located in Nicaragua.
As the Laurina variety is cold-resistant, the climate in Nicaragua is perfect for this climate.
The low caffeine content is a very special characteristic of this coffee variety. Laurina beans contain around 0,3%-0,7% caffeine, whereas standard arabica varieties have 1,2-1,6%. Caffeine is the plant’s natural protection. The lack of it makes the variety extremely sensitive to pests and bugs. This is why the variety is so rare – it is tough to plant and cultivate. But it gives us the possibility to taste an incredibly flavourful coffee, with very low caffeine and no extra process to remove the caffeine content. Fortunately, we were able to get our hands on some bags this year!
After harvesting, the beans have been naturally processed. This means the cherries are spread to dry in the sun with the whole fruit flesh. This gives the coffee later an incredibly sweet and fruity flavour and a silky body.
We tasted fruity notes of raspberry and sweet plum. This Laurina coffee is a natural and tasty low-caf that you don’t want to miss out on!
About the farm
Finca La Escondida is run by the Mierisch family. In Nicaragua, they started their coffee journey over a hundred years ago. The Mierisch family owns ten farms in the Jinotega and Matagalpa areas. A few years ago, they expanded their business to neighbouring Honduras, where they grow great coffees on Finca Cerro Azul. Finca La Escondida, where our coffee beans grew, is in the Jinotga region.
