About this coffee
Our Los Tres Potros coffee is a powerhouse of flavour, which very much deserves the Cup Of Excellence award. The beans have been processed using the Natural method and we roasted them lightly, so that the silky soft texture is highlighted. We taste notes of fruity pineapple, and warm notes of milk chocolate and sweet nougat.
The Pacamara variety is a cross between the Pacas and Maragogype varieties. It was created in El Salvador in 1958. With Pacamara, the best characteristics of these two varieties come together. It is characterised by particularly large red cherries with a fruity and chocolaty taste. The Pacas variety is a natural mutation of the well-known Bourbon bean, while the Maragogype is a mutation of the Typica variety, which was first discovered in Brazil. It is also called the “Elephant Bean” because its plants produce large leaves and beans.
The Pacamara is an elaborate Arabica variety that requires care. But the effort is worth it: Los Tres Potros produces incredibly clear coffees, with fine, balanced aromas and a concise character. With these taste profiles – creamy textures, tropical fruit nuances and sweet highlights – they also scored well at the El Salvador Cup Of Excellence 2018.
About the Farm
Los Tres Potros is a family owned farm that is actually managed by GECA Coffee. The owner, Nora Silvia Cabezas de Mendez Florez, is from the Apaneca area, in the department of Ahuachapan. She bought the farm, which is located at 1,500 meters above sea level and measures 8,000 m2, in 2001 and the family has one goal: to grow specialty coffee of outstanding quality. They grow Pacamara plants at 1500 meters above sea level. The name of the farm means “The Three Colts” – this is derived from the three sons: besides their love for coffee, they also love horses. Like the Pacamara trees, the farm is still very young and therefore produces an outstanding cup quality. In 2016 their coffees have reached over 91 points on the cupping score. They have therefore won the “Exceptional quality for the World” award and the title of “Presidential Coffee”.
Los Tres Potros Farm is a family run farm in the Apaneca region of El Salvador. After purchasing the farm in 2001, the family decided to exclusively grow pacamara plants at an altitude of over 1500 meters.
